The fundamental characteristic of today's plural democratic societies is that it offers the possibility to choose in all areas of life, including education. While a strong argument can be made against a diverse educational offer in homogenous communities, in pluralistic societies, where a number of different ethnic, linguistic and religious groups coexist, it is much more difficult to defend the concept of distinctive schools without violating the rights of children and parents to choose the educational environment that they consider the most appropriate and that corresponds to their values. The concept of freedom of education includes, among other things, the right of the Catholic Church to establish educational institutions and manage them according to its own moral principles. It is well known that the Catholic Church has a long and rich experience in educational activity; Catholic schools are the largest group of private and religious schools in the world today, and the trend of student enrollment at the global level is constantly increasing. In the past fourteen years, twelve Catholic primary schools have been opened in Croatia, and, as there are indications that new ones will be opened, the need for more systematic knowledge of them has been noticed. This paper contains a review of qualitative research conducted by interviewing principals with the aim of determining the particularities of contemporary Catholic primary schools in Croatia and their contribution to pedagogical pluralism. Basing its work on general human and Christian values, putting the person in its complete transcendent identity at the center of its activities, advocating for the integral and harmonious development of all the constituent elements of a person, introducing its own methods and means of educational work, Catholic primary schools in Croatia provide an essential contribution to the pluralism of educational opportunities.
