Sažetak

This master thesis seeks to showcase how the poverty in the first half of the twentieth century manifested itself among British population, based on one novel and two short stories written by Walter Greenwood. Greenwood was on the dole himself plenty of times and played an important role for the genre of social realism in British literature. A brief overview of post-war Britain is provided to properly present the political and social context of the British consciousness at the time. It is also important to show how the working classes and poverty is represented both in the collective British mindset and on an individual level. The New Poverty Studies is introduced as an interdisciplinary approach that creates a comprehensive methodological framework for studying poverty. This representation is further contextualized by an overview of how the New Poverty Studies is linked with the literary genre of social realism. In this aspect, Walter Greenwood’s Love on The Dole, The Cleft Stick and Any Bread, Cake or Pie? will be analysed by showcasing traumatic experiences and their significance in the context of The New Poverty Studies and the representation of the working classes at the time.
