The Devil’s in the Details: The Translation of Religion-based Expressions in the Croatian Netflix Subtitles for "Lucifer"

Abstract

The research for the thesis was conducted within the context of translation studies and subtitling with an emphasis on translation strategies and the retention of religion-based expressions and components in the Croatian subtitles of the Netflix series Lucifer. The speech style of the titular protagonist is marked by recontextualisation of everyday religion-based expressions and frequent plays on idioms that build the basis for characterisation, humour and the plot of the series. The qualitative and quantitative analysis of these segments provides an insight not only into the most commonly employed strategies in the Netflix translation, but also the ways in which the choice of the available translation strategies is influenced by the time and space constraints of audiovisual translation, the religious markedness of the idioms and fixed expressions, as well as the conversational context between the characters. The results showed that an unexpectedly high number of subtitles were produced through substitution with a predicted high rate of RBC occurrence in the subtitles. The theoretical framework of this case study was based on the modified version of Baker’s existing model for the translation of idioms and fixed expressions in general
