Abstract

This thesis comprises five translations with commentary. Excerpts from three books were translated from English into Croatian (Red Sands. Reportage and Recipes Through Central Asia from Hinterland to Heartland by Caroline Eden, The Hidden Adult. Defining Children’s Literature by Perry Nodelman and 12 Bytes. How We Got Here. Where We Might Go Next by Jeanette Winterson), and two from Croatian into English (Staklo u Dubrovačkoj Republici u svjetlu arheoloških nalaza by Nikolina Topić and Iva, do Mjeseca i natrag by Roman Simić). The commentary focuses on the ways in which different types of context influenced the choice of translation solutions. It analyses instances in which considering factors such as the genre of the text, its intended audience, its intertextual references and the translator’s knowledge of the world helped in making informed decisions and choosing appropriate translation strategies.

Abstract (croatian)

Rad se sastoji od pet prijevoda s popratnim komentarima. Ulomci iz triju knjiga prevedeni su s engleskog na hrvatski (Caroline Eden: Red Sands. Reportage and Recipes Through Central Asia from Hinterland to Heartland, Perry Nodelman: The Hidden Adult. Defining Children’s Literature i Jeanette Winterson: 12 Bytes. How We Got Here. Where We Might Go Next), a ulomci iz dviju knjiga s hrvatskog na engleski (Nikolina Topić: Staklo u Dubrovačkoj Republici u svjetlu arheoloških nalaza i Roman Simić: Iva, do Mjeseca i natrag). U komentarima je poseban naglasak stavljen na različite vrste konteksta i načine na koje je razmatranje konteksta utjecalo na odabir prijevodnih rješenja. Analiziraju se primjeri u kojima je bilo potrebno uzeti u obzir čimbenike poput vrste teksta, ciljane publike, intertekstualnih poveznica te vlastitog znanja o svijetu kako bi se donijele informirane odluke i odabrale prikladne prijevodne strategije.
