Abstract

U Platona se etimologija javlja u okviru pitanja o ispravnosti imenā u Kratilu. Različiti pojmovi ispravnosti imenā ovise o tome kako se shvati odnos naravi i dogovora u imenovanju. Pokazuje se kako imena imaju određenu prirodnu ispravnost, ali i da dogovor i običaj također sudjeluju u imenovanju. Imena iskazuju narav stvari, tj. mogu biti istinita i lažna, ali na drugi način nego što su istiniti i lažni govori kao iskazi. Ime je slika ili nasljedba ideje koju imenuje, i tu sliku tvori umješnik imenotvorac. Budući da umijeće imenotvorstva tvori ime kao sliku na osnovu nekoga uvida u ideju, istraživanje imena ne može biti pouzdan put iznalaženja ideje, tj. istine. Filozofijska etimologija na osnovi umskoga uvida u ideju određuje koja su imena ispravna, a koja ne, i u skladu s time koliko je moguće imenuje stvari njima primjerenim imenima.

Abstract (english)

In Plato etymology appears as a part of investigating the correctness of names in the Cratylus. Different notions of correctness of names depend on how the relationship between nature and convention in naming is understood. It is shown that names have a certain natural correctness, but that agreement and custom also take part in naming. Names express the nature of things, i.e. they can be true and false, yet not in the same manner as propositions are. A name is an image or an imitation of the idea it names, and that image is produced by an artisan namemaker. Since this art of namemaking creates a name as an image based on a certain insight into the thing named, investigating the name can’t be taken as a reliable way of reaching the truth. Philosophical etymology, on the basis of noetic insight, determines which names are correct and which are not, and in accordance with this, as far as possible, names things with appropriate names.
