Abstract

Stoička je filozofija razvila jednu od najutjecajnijih teorija emocija. Te su predstavljane kao neprihvatljiva prepreka u napredovanju ljudskog duha. Sam cilj čovjeka, po stoičkoj filozofiji, jest stanje koje se naziva apatheia (grč. απάθεια), odnosno ravnodušnost, neuznemirenost ili odsustvo emocija. Posebno je kritizirana emocija ljutnje koja se smatra najopasnijom, najrazornijom strašću. Buddhistička filozofija, vrlo slično, sagledava emocije kao dijelove ljudske prirode koji su prepreka duhovnom razvoju prema nirvāṇi pa su time i etički nepoželjna stanja. U Aṅguttaranikāyi gnjevan čovjek opisan je vrlo slično kao u Senekinoj prvoj knjizi O gnjevu. U Mađđhimanikāyi i Samyuttanikāyi nalazimo niz opisa i savjeta u vezi ljutnje i nošenja s njom. U ovom ću radu istražiti sličnosti i razlike među tim dvjema tradicijama. Stoičku ću filozofiju predstaviti kroz Senekin spis O gnjevu dok ću buddhističku filozofiju prikazati kroz odabrane ulomke iz kanonske zbirke Suttapiṭake. Nakon same analize i usporedbe tradicija, predstavit ću i kritiku stoičke tradicije koju iznosi Martha Nussbaum, a koju je moguće primijeniti i na buddhističku filozofiju.

Abstract (english)

Stoic philosophy developed one of the most influential theories of emotions. They are presented as an unacceptable obstacle in the functioning of the human spirit. The very goal of man, according to Stoic philosophy, is a state called apatheia (απάθεια), that is, indifference, impartiality or absence of emotions. The emotion of anger, which is considered the most dangerous and destructive passion, was especially criticized. Buddhist philosophy, very similarly, sees emotions as parts of human nature that are an obstacle in the spiritual development towards nirvana and are therefore ethically undesirable states. In the Aṅguttaranikāya the angry man is described very much as Seneca does in the first book of On Anger. In Majjhimanikāya and Samyuttanikāya we find a number of descriptions and advice regarding anger and dealing with it. In this paper I will explore the similarities and differences between these two traditions. I will present the Stoic philosophy through Senecaʼs work On Anger, while I will present Buddhist philosophy through the aforementioned parts of the Suttapiṭaka canon. After the analysis and comparison of the traditions, I will also present the criticism of the Stoic tradition presented by Martha Nussbaum, which can also be applied to Buddhist philosophy.
