Abstract

The important role of textbooks in education system has been emphasized by many authors. Numerous studies have focused on analyzing textbooks in search of gender stereotypes. This thesis examined three ESL textbooks used in Croatian school system to investigate whether gender bias is present in three different categories: free-time activities, representation of real-life people and achievements, and adjectives. A critical study was conducted using the methods of content analysis and critical discourse analysis and the results have shown that gender stereotypes are not as prominent as they used to be, but they are still present. Even though a change for the better is noticeable, gender bias still remains evident, especially in the categories of real-life people and achievements.

Abstract (croatian)

Mnogi autori naglašavaju ulogu udžbenika u obrazovanju. Brojna istraživanja bave se analizom rodnih stereotipa u udžbenicima. U ovom radu kritičkom su analizom analizirana tri udžbenika engleskog jezika koji se koriste u hrvatskom obrazovnom sustavu kako bi se istražili rodni stereotipi u tri kategorije: aktivnosti slobodnog vremena, prikaz ljudi iz stvarnog života i njihovih postignuća, te pridjevi koji se koriste pri opisu žena i muškaraca. Korištene su metode analize sadržaja i kritičke analize diskursa. Rezultati su pokazali da rodni stereotipi više nisu istaknuti i upadljivi kao što su to prikazala prijašnja istraživanja, no još uvijek su prisutni. Iako postoji promjena na bolje, rodne nejednakosti su i dalje evidentne, osobito u kategoriji prikaza ljudi iz stvarnog života i njihovih postignuća.
