Abstract

S obzirom da pandemija bolesti COVID-19 ne ostavlja samo posljedice na tjelesno, već i na mentalno zdravlje, čini se kako može predstavljati opasnost i za sliku tijela. Cilj ovog istraživanja bio je utvrditi rodne razlike u različitim aspektima slike tijela, aktivnostima povezanima s fotografijama sebe na društvenim mrežama te u sklonosti uspoređivanja tjelesnog izgleda, kao i ispitati njihovu prediktivnost te prediktivnost roda i indeksa tjelesne mase (ITM-a) za nezadovoljstvo tijelom i primjenu različitih strategija promjene tjelesnog izgleda. Istraživanje je provedeno online na 228 sudionika (76.1 % žene), dobi od 18 do 55 godina (M = 26.5, SD = 6.99). Primijenjeni su: Upitnik usmjerenosti na sliku tijela u vrijeme pandemije, ljestvice Investiranja u fotografije na društvenim mrežama te Manipulacije fotografijama, Skala uzlaznog i silaznog uspoređivanja tjelesnog izgleda te Inventar slike tijela i promjene tjelesnog izgleda. Rezultati pokazuju da je ženama slika tijela važnija, na nju su u vrijeme pandemije usmjerenije, češće se upuštaju u aktivnosti povezane s fotografijama sebe na društvenim mrežama te su sklonije uspoređivanju vlastitog tjelesnog izgleda. ITM, usmjerenost na sliku tijela u vrijeme pandemije i uzlazno uspoređivanje su pozitivni prediktori nezadovoljstva tijelom. Ženski rod i ITM pozitivni su prediktori primjene strategija mršavljenja, a negativni prediktori primjene strategija povećanja tjelesne težine i povećanja mišića. ITM je također negativan prediktor primjene strategija učvršćivanja mišića. Nezadovoljstvo tijelom pozitivan je prediktor primjene strategija mršavljenja te učvršćivanja i povećanja mišića, dok je važnost slike tijela pozitivan prediktor primjene svih ispitanih strategija promjene tjelesnog izgleda. Porast vremena provedenog kod kuće, ali i vremena provedenog na društvenim mrežama može povećati već postojeći intenzivan pritisak na žene i muškarce za dostizanjem nametnutih ideala tjelesnog izgleda, što bi moglo pridonijeti održavanju ili razvoju ozbiljnijih smetnji povezanih sa slikom tijela.

Abstract (english)

Given that the COVID-19 pandemic is not only affecting physical but also mental health, it appears that it may pose a threat to body image as well. The aim of this study was to identify gender differences in various body image aspects, activities related to images of oneself on social networks and the tendency to compare body appearance as well as to examine their predictivity and the predictive value of gender and body mass index (BMI) for body dissatisfaction and frequency of body change strategies use. The study was conducted online on 228 participants (76.1% women), aged 18 to 55 years (M = 26.5, SD = 6.99). The following questionnaires were applied: Questionnaire of focusing on body image during the pandemic, Photo Investment and Photo Manipulation, Upward and Downward Appearance Comparison Scale, Body Image and Body Change Inventory. The results show that body image is more important to women, they are more focused on it during the pandemic, they are more likely to engage in activities related to selfies on social networks and are more inclined to compare their own body appearance. BMI, body image focus at the time of the pandemic and an upward comparison are positive predictors of body dissatisfaction. Female gender and BMI are positive predictors of weight loss strategies, and negative predictors of weight gain and muscle gain strategies. BMI is also a negative predictor of muscle strengthening strategies use. Body dissatisfaction is a positive predictor of weight loss, muscle gain and muscle strengthening strategies use, while body image importance is a positive predictor of the use of all tested body change strategies. An increase in time spent at home, but also in time spent on social media can enhance the already existing intense pressure on women and men to achieve imposed ideals of physical appearance, which could contribute to maintaining or developing more serious disorders related to body image.
