Abstract

The following thesis offers a comparative analysis of the English and Croatian translation of the children’s novel Heidi written by the Swiss author Johanna Spyri. In the first part of the thesis, I explore the difficulties translators often face when translating culture-specific content in children’s literature, providing a short overview of various translation procedures often employed in such translations. In the second part of the thesis an analysis of the translation procedures used to render culture-specific items in the Croatian and English translation of Heidi is presented. The aim is to analyse the differences and similarities between the procedures used in the translations and to determine whether translators used more target culture-oriented or source culture-oriented procedures. The findings have shown that the three most frequently used procedures are the same in both translations. Furthermore, the Croatian translation contains the same percentage of both source- and target-oriented procedures. The English translation contains slightly more source culture and source language-oriented procedures.
