Abstract

Videoigre danas čine jedno od najvećih i najbrže rastućih tržišta na svijetu te samim time zauzimaju sve važniji položaj unutar društvene, kulturne i umjetničke sfere. Kako se poimanje videoigara postupno mijenja od djetinje razbibrige prema zasebnom i samostalnom mediju koji može stajati uz bok drugih afirmiranih vizualnih medija, tako se širi i pripadajuće područje istraživanja. Na tom tragu u ovome radu razmatram prihvaćenost umjetničke dimenzije videoigara i mogućnosti konstrukcije i prezentacije virtualnog prostora na primjeru videoigre BioShock. U obzir ću uzeti kompleksni međuodnos gravidnih elemenata videoigre s ciljem ukazivanja na uzajamni međuodnos teorijskog i praktičnog oblikovanja prostora. Nadalje, analizirat ću filozofske i vizualne odabire pri oblikovanju imaginarnog svijeta Rapturea te kako se oni prenose u konkretni virtualni prostor. Pri tome ću uzeti u obzir utjecaj drugih umjetničkih praksi poput oblikovanja interijera i arhitekture koji se u mediju videoigara odražavaju uspostavom vizualne hijerarhije i određenju funkcionalnosti prostora. Na kraju rada zaključujem da je važno osvijestiti načine oblikovanja prostora videoigre i njihove višedimenzionalne odnose u svrhu valoriziranja videoigara kao samostalnog i jedinstvenog, sve prisutnijeg medija današnjice.

Abstract (english)

Video games present one of the biggest and fastest-growing markets in the world. As such, they occupy an increasingly more important position within the societal, cultural and artistic scene. As our understanding of video games gradually turns from a childish pastime to a more distinct and autonomous medium which can stand alongside other established visual media, the relevant field of study also grows. Following that, this thesis considers the acceptance of the artistic dimension of video games and the possibilities in constructing and presenting virtual spaces on the example of the video game BioShock. It takes into account the elements that make up the video game in order to establish a connection between the theoretical and practical sides of creating virtual spaces. Furthermore, the philosophical and visual choices in creating Rapture are analyzed, as well as the way they are transferred into the particular virtual space. Finally, the thesis argues the importance of being aware of how the video game spaces are created, as well as their multi-faceted relations, as it is a step towards valorizing video games as an autonomous and unique medium, evermore present in today’s world.
