Abstract

Humans are thinking beings and search for comprehension in every aspect of their lives. Some of the main components of achieving comprehension are mental models and inferences. When reading a text, language is the medium by which the information is transmitted. The goal of this thesis is to show that when trying to recall information, readers’ memory is affected by the inferences and mental models they create and thus they make a number of ‘incorrect’ inferences alongside ‘correct’ ones. The study involved 40 participants divided into two groups. The results confirmed the original hypothesis as 100 percent of participants made ‘incorrect’ inferences alongside ‘correct’ ones regardless of their different backgrounds.

Abstract (croatian)

Ljudi su misaona bića koja teže razumijevanju u svakom aspektu svog života. Neke od glavnih komponenti postizanja razumijevanja su mentalni model i inferencije. Kod čitanja teksta, jezik je medij kojim se informacije prenose. Cilj ovog rada bio je pokazati da kod prisjećanja informacija, pamćenje čitatelja je pod utjecajem inferencija i mentalnih modela koje stvaraju te stoga donose niz ’netočnih’ zaključaka (inferencija) pored ’točnih’. U istraživanju je sudjelovalo 40 sudionika podijeljenih u svije skupine. Rezultati su potvrdili izvornu hipotezu jer je 100 posto ispitanika donijelo ’netočne’ zaključke uz one ’točne’, bez obzira na njihove različite osobne sposobnosti i karakteristike.
