Ökofeministische Lektüre von Marlen Haushofers "Die Wand" und Hannelore Valencaks "Die Höhlen Noahs"

Abstract

Seit seiner Wiederentdeckung in den 80er Jahren des letzten Jahrhunderts genießt Marlen Haushofers Roman "Die Wand" große Popularität, besonders in einem feministischen Kontext. Der Roman behandelt Fragen, die nicht nur das Verhältnis zwischen Männern und Frauen betreffen, sondern auch die Beziehung zwischen Menschen und Natur, und insbesondere zwischen Menschen und Tieren – Themen, die auch für den Ökofeminismus von Interesse sind. Hannelore Valencaks wesentlich unbekannterer Roman "Die Höhlen Noahs" weist viele Gemeinsamkeiten mit Haushofers Roman auf, sowohl hinsichtlich der Themen, die in den Werken aufgegriffen werden, als auch in Bezug auf den äußeren Kontext wie Zeit und Ort der Veröffentlichung der Romane. Ziel dieser Arbeit war es daher, diese Romane in ökofeministischer Perspektive zu analysieren und zu untersuchen, inwieweit jeder der beiden Romane den Postulaten der ökofeministischen Theorie entspricht. Zu diesem Zweck bietet die Arbeit zunächst einen kurzen Überblick zur Geschichte und den Hauptaussagen des Ökofeminismus. Der zweite Teil enthält eine Analyse der Romane, die ihrerseits in drei Teile gegliedert ist, die sich auf drei in den beiden Romanen behandelte Themen beziehen: Geschlechterverhältnisse, Mensch-Tier Verhältnisse und Zivilisationskritik. Die Ergebnisse dieser Analyse zeigen, dass die Romane zwar thematisch ähnlich sind, sich aber in ihren Ansätzen stark unterscheiden, wobei Haushofers Roman weitaus komplexere und tiefere Überlegungen zu den vorliegenden Fragen hervorbringt, während Valencaks Roman weitgehend vage und etwas verschwommen bleibt und ihm die scharfe Gesellschaftskritik fehlt, die "Die Wand" bietet. Dies erklärt und rechtfertigt vielleicht auch die Diskrepanzen zwischen der Rezeption der beiden Autorinnen.

Abstract (english)

From its rediscovery in the ‘80s of the last century, Marlen Haushofer’s novel "Die Wand" has enjoyed great popularity, especially within a feminist context. Importantly, the novel features questions which regard not only the relationship between men and women, but also the relationship between mankind and nature, and more specifically, between humans and animals, which are also areas of interest for ecofeminism. Hannelore Valencak's significantly less well-known novel "Die Höhlen Noahs" shares many similarities with Haushofer's novel, both in terms of the themes the works approach and in terms of external context such as the time and location of the novels’ publication. Thus, the goal of this paper was to analyze these novels through an ecofeminist lense and to attempt to determine to which extent each of them aligns with the postulates of ecofeminist theory. For this purpose, the paper first offers a short overview of the history and main claims of ecofeminism. The second part features an analysis of the novels and is itself split into three parts, based on three themes which are explored (to a smaller or larger extent) in both novels: gender relations, the relationship between humans and animals and cultural criticism. The results of this analysis show that, while the novels are indeed similar in themes, their approaches are very different, with Haushofer's novel bringing forth far more complex and deeper reflections on the questions at hand, whereas Valencak’s novel remains largely vague and somewhat confusing and lacks the sharp critique of society that "Die Wand" offers. This perhaps also explains and justifies the discrepancies between the reception of the two authors.
