| Abstract | Denominated as one of the most prominent literary figures of the 20th century, Virginia Woolf emerged as one of the pillars of the modern British literature. Her literary style, also known as stream of consciousness, innovated traditional literary structures by delving into the intricacies of characters' inner thoughts and consciousness. Contrary to the assumption that Woolf's focus remains exclusively on the individual, this paper seeks to unravel the intricate interplay of romantic, familial, and social bonds in To the Lighthouse and Between the Acts. Moreover, the paper’s central focus is set upon on the social bonds in relation to each novel’s social and historical context. Each chapter explores a different kind of social relationships: different marriage and family unions, as well as broader social contexts. Furthermore, the paper accentuates Woolf's nuanced exploration of social dynamics in different historical perspectives, particularly emphasizing the power dynamics, gender politics, and class distinctions prevalent in To the Lighthouse. The characterizations of Mrs. Ramsay, Mr. Ramsay, and other members of the social circle exemplify Woolf's keen critique of societal norms and class divisions. The analysis extends to Between the Acts where the historical context of England on the brink of a war serves as a backdrop for the exploration of social interactions between different classes. The annual village pageant becomes a symbolic representation of societal problems, social change, and personal behaviour against a historical perspective. The comparative analysis indicates that Between the Acts with its explicit historical foundation, offers a broader exploration of social interactions than To the Lighthouse Woolf's primary objective, evident in her detailed analysis of romantic, familial, and social bonds, appears to be a redirection of focus from individual introspection towards a comprehensive commentary on British society's romantic, familial, and social dysfunction across different historical periods. |
| Abstract (croatian) | Poznata kao jedna od najistaknutijih književnih figura 20. stoljeća, Virginia Woolf istaknula se kao jedan od stupova moderne britanske književnosti. Njen književni stil, poznat i kao struja svijesti, inovirao je tradicionalne književne strukture istraživanjem zamršenosti unutarnjih misli i svijesti likova. Suprotno pretpostavci da se spisateljičina pažnja isključivo usmjerava na pojedinca, ovaj rad nastoji rasplesti intrikatnu međuigru romantičnih, obiteljskih i društvenih veza u djelima "To the Lighthouse" i "Between the Acts". Nadalje, centralni fokus rada postavljen je na društvene veze u odnosu na društveni i povijesni kontekst svakog romana. Svako poglavlje istražuje različite vrste društvenih odnosa: romantične i bračne veze, kao i šire društvene kontekste.
