Constructions with MIND and PAMET in English and Croatian: A Cognitive Analysis

Abstract

This thesis deals with the conceptualization of the abstract concepts MIND in English and PAMET in Croatian from a cognitive linguistic perspective. The aim of this thesis is to find out whether English and Croatian speakers perceive the two concepts in the same way. Focus is placed on identifying prevalent metaphors and metonymies in constructions with MIND and PAMET, and establishing which cultural models are present in two languages. To do this, a corpus study was performed, and the concordances were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. The results showed that cultural models that appeared in the two languages were different, while the metaphors and metonymies were mainly the same, which is likely the result of the words studied.

Abstract (croatian)

Tema je ovog istraživačkog rada konceptualizacija apstraktnih pojmova MIND u engleskom i PAMET u hrvatskom jeziku iz kognitivnolingvističke perspektive. Cilj ovog rada jest saznati konceptualiziraju li govornici engleskog i hrvatskog jezika MIND, odnosno PAMET, na jednak način. Istraživanje je usmjereno na prepoznavanje metafora i metonimija u sintagmama koje sadržavaju riječi MIND i PAMET te na prepoznavanje kulturnih modela koji su prisutni u dvama jezicima. Zaključci se donose na temelju kvalitativnog i kvantitativnog korpusnog istraživanja. Rezultati su pokazali da su kulturni modeli u hrvatskom i engleskom različiti, ali su konceptualne metafore i metonimije uglavnom iste, što je vjerojatno posljedica izbora riječi koje su se istraživale.
