Abstract

År 1946 använde den franske kritikern Nino Frank för första gången termen film noir på Hollywood- kriminalfilmer som visades på franska bion den sommaren. De alla hade vissa gemensamma drag som gav dem en mörk (på franska noir) estetik. Genren upplevde sitt återupplivande med början på 1980-talet. Regissörer utökade inte bara teman, utan också om saker som tidigare ansågs omoraliska till exempel använding av blod, våldsdåd och sex. Dansk regissör Nicolas Winding Refn är mest känd för sin neo-noir och 1980-talsestetik som dominerar i filmer som Drive (2011), Only God Forgives (2013), etc. I min examen kommer jag att analysera och skriva om aspekter av hans filmer som ger dem giltighet för att klassas som neo-noir.

Abstract (croatian)

Godine 1946. francuski je filmski kritičar Nino Frank prvi upotrijebio izraz film noir kako bi opisao američke kriminalističke filmove koje je gledao tog ljeta. Svi su se oni razlikovali od uobičajenih krimića jer su koristili mračne, tmurne elemente. Žanr je ponovno oživio početkom 1970-tih, pod nazivom neo-noir. Za razliku od klasičnog noira, ovi su filmovi pomicali tabu granice u smislu eksplicitnog prikazivanja zločina, nasilja i krvi, što je dugo bilo zabranjeno. Danski je redatelj Nicolas Winding Refn najpoznatiji po svojim neo-noir filmovima i serijama. U svome radu analiziram njegove filmove Pusher(1996.), Drive (2011.) i Only God Forgives (2013.) ističući elemente koji ih čine prikladnim za kategoriju neo-noira. Ukratko, svaki prati nemoralnog glavnog lika, radnja se događa u suvremenom gradu i odvija se oko zločina. Stilski su obilježeni čestim korištenjem kontrasta, kako onog klasičnog crno-bijelog, tako i onog modernog koji podrazumijeva visoku prisutnost neonskih boja i svjetala.

Abstract (english)

In 1946, French critic Nino Frank first applied the term film noir to Hollywood crime films shown in French cinemas that summer. They all had certain common features that gave them a dark (in French, noir) aesthetic. The genre experienced its revival starting in the 1970s. Directors expanded not only on themes, but also on things previously considered immoral such as the use of blood, violence, and sex. Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn is best known for his neo-noir and 1980s
aesthetic that dominates in several of his works. In this paper, I analyze and write about aspects of his films that give them validity to be classified as neo-noir by referencing Pusher (1996), Drive (2011) and Only God Forgives (2013). Briefly, each of these films is set in a contemporary metropolis, has a morally questionable protagonist, and deals with crime. Apart from that, their visual style is characterized by a high usage of contrasts; either classical noir “black-and-white” chiaroscuros or neo-noir bright neon lights set against dim and dark surroundings.
