Abstract

U književnosti 20. stoljeća kao reakcija na dva svjetska rata i totalitarne režime pojavili su se prikazi budućnosti koju bi trebalo izbjeći. Distopija je suprotnost utopije, imaginarne i savršeno uređene zajednice u kojoj ljudi sretno žive u blagostanju. Romani Kallocain švedske spisateljice Karin Boye i Fahrenheit 451 američkog pisca Raya Bradburya pripadaju distopijskoj književnosti. U oba romana prikazan je totalitaristički režim koji ne poštuje čovjeka, a tvrdi da sve čini za njegovo dobro. Ukida osnovne ljudske slobode, a obećava sigurnost ili zabavu zbog koje bi ljudi trebali biti zadovoljni državom. Znanstvena i tehnološka otkrića služe kontroli i represiji, a postoji stalna prijetnja ratom koja se na kraju i ostvari. Neki pojedinci oduševljeno služe režimu, neki u njega sumnjaju, a postoje i oni koji se ne slažu s njim. Žive po svojim pravilima i jedino su oni iskreno sretni. Ovi romani upozoravaju nas na opasnost da se sadašnji problemi u svijetu pretvore u najgoru distopijsku budućnost, ali ostaje nada da se čovječanstvo može promijeniti.

Abstract (english)

In the 20th century literature, as a reaction to two world wars and totalitarian regimes, depictions of a future that should be avoided appeared. Dystopia is the opposite of utopia, an imaginary and perfectly arranged community where people live happily in prosperity. The novels Kallocain by the Swedish writer Karin Boye and Fahrenheit 451 by the American writer Ray Bradbury belong to dystopian literature. Both novels depict a totalitarian regime that does not respect people, but claims to do everything for their good. It abolishes basic human liberties, while promising security or entertainment that should make people live contently under the regime. Scientific and technological discoveries are used for control and repression, and there is a constant threat of war that eventually comes true. Some individuals enthusiastically serve the regime, some doubt it, and there are those who disagree with it. The latter live by their own rules and only they are truly happy. These novels warn us of the danger of the current problems in the world that is turning into the worst dystopian future, but hope remains that humanity can change.
