Abstract

U dalekoj prošlosti ljudi su, nakon razmjene dobara, dobili potrebu za nekim načinom
plaćanja usluga. Iz te se potrebe, tijekom godina, razvio i naš današnji sustav plaćanja
novcem, odnosno valutom. Pojavom interneta, u ranim 90im godinama prošloga stoljeća,
dolazi do raznih promjena u svakodnevnom životu ljudi. Računalo postaje osnovna
potrepština svakoga čovjeka, mobitel omogućuje, gdje god se osoba nalazi, saznati bilo koju
informaciju koja je potrebna. Daljnjim razvitkom tehnologije dolazi također i velika
promjena u načinu plaćanja, razvija se digitalni oblik valuta, odnosno kriptovaluta.
Kriptovalute, kao i obične valute, imaju svoju vrijednost, njima se može kupovati, ali za
razliku od običnih valuta – iza njih ne stoji država. One funkcioniraju na principu
kriptografskih algoritama. U ovom radu dan je pregled tehnologije koja stoji iza
kriptovaluta, njihov značaj u današnjem svijetu, te kroz njihove pozitivne i negativne strane,
detaljnije su prikazane dvije najpoznatije kriptovalute – Bitcoin i Ethereum.

Abstract (english)

In the past, after they would trade goods, people had to develop a system of payment for the
service. From this need, over the years, our present system of payment in money or currency
has developed. With the advent of the internet, in the early 90s of the last century, there are
various changes in people’s daily lives. Computers become a necessity for people, mobile
phones enable people to find out any information needed, no matter where the person is.
The further development of technology brings us a big change in the way of payment, digital
currencies or cryptocurrencies are developed. Cryptocurrencies, like ordinary currencies,
have their own value, they can be used to make purchases, but unlike ordinary currencies –
they are not backed by the state. They work on the principle of cryptographic algorithms.

This thesis provides an overview of the technology behind cryptocurrencies, their
importance in today’s world, and through their positive and negative sides, the two most
famous cryptocurrencies – Bitcoin and Ethereum – are presented in more detail.
