Abstract

The paper is a multimodal critical discourse analysis of English-teaching YouTube videos. It closely analyzes four selected videos from the Eat Sleep Dream English channel. The multimodal approach in this paper analyzes primarily language and visual communication, which is why the results for each video consist of two parts. The first part is focused on the speaker’s linguistic choices such as the use of pronouns, modality, and imperatives. It also reveals linguistic ideologies implicit in the discourse such as heteroglossia, iconization, and the standard language ideology. In addition, the analysis shows that some of these ideas are contradictory. The second part is focused on the use of visual communication, which includes the choice of background, clothes, lighting, colors, etc. The paper shows how the speaker uses elements of the two modes of communication in order to shape the viewer’s perception. It also shows how the individual choices of words or visual elements contribute to modifying the overall meaning.
