Translation with Commentary: Focusing on Target-Orientedness

Abstract

This thesis comprises five translations with commentary. Excerpts from three books were translated from English into Croatian (The Establishment: And How They Get Away With It, Making Minds: What's Wrong with Education - and What Should We Do about It?, Reclaiming Conversation), and two from Croatian into English (Ekološki otisak - kako je razvoj zgazio održivost, Iran u prezentu). The commentary primarily focused on different translation strategies that were adopted during the translation process. Emphasis was placed on target-orientedness and the idiomaticity of the target text, as well as the importance of keeping in mind the function of the source and target texts and the target audience.

Abstract (croatian)

Ovaj rad sastoji se od pet prijevoda s popratnim komentarima. Ulomci iz triju knjiga prevedeni su s engleskog jezika na hrvatski (The Establishment: And How They Get Away With It, Making Minds: What's Wrong with Education - and What Should We Do about It?, Reclaiming Conversation), dok su ulomci iz preostale dvije knjige prevedene s hrvatskog jezika na engleski (Ekološki otisak - kako je razvoj zgazio održivost, Iran u prezentu). U komentarima sam se prvenstveno osvrtala na prijevodne strategije kojima sam se koristila tijekom procesa prevođenja, a posebnu sam pažnju posvetila usmjerenosti na ciljni jezik i kulturu te idiomatičnost, kao i na važnost funkcije izvornog i ciljnog teksta te ciljne publike.
