Abstract

Nastavni proces je mjesto u kojem pojedinac doživljava mnogobrojne emocionalne reakcije, a koje u konačnici utječu na kvalitetu učenja te posljedično na uspjeh pojedinca. Ovo je istraživanje imalo za cilj utvrditi razinu straha od jezika u visokoškolskoj nastavi i otkriti povezanost razine straha s razinom jezične kompetencije, znanjem drugih romanskih jezika, višejezičnosti, boravkom u zemlji portugalskog govornog područja i ocjenama. Na temelju dobivenih rezultata nastavnici bi zajedno sa studentima mogli raditi na smanjivanju straha čime bi doprinjeli kvalitetnijem učenju stranih jezika. Provedeno kvantitativno i kvalitativno istraživanje pokazalo je kako je razina straha studenata portugalskog jezika srednja te da su izvor straha u najvećoj mjeri individualne karakteristike studenata. Istraživanjem je utvrđeno da najveći strah studenti osjećaju pri upotrebi jezične vještine govora, a najmanji pri čitanju. S druge strane, boravak na govornom području zemlje čiji se jezik uči nije se pokazao kao faktor koji utječe na smanjenje razine straha od jezika. Najvažniji rezultat je onaj koji pokazuje kako je strah od jezika itekako prisutan u visokoškolskoj nastavi te da negativno utječe na akademski uspjeh.

Abstract (english)

A classroom is a place where an individual experiences numerous emotional reactions which have an effect on the quality of learning and subsequently on the success of the individual. The goal of this research was to examine the level of foreign language anxiety and the correlation between foreign language anxiety and variables such as language competence, knowledge of other Roman languages, multilingualism, prior history of visiting the Portuguese speaking countries and course grades. On the basis of the research results both teachers and students could try to diminish level of the anxiety and contribute to the better learning of foreign languages. The research was based on quantitative and qualitative methodology whose results have shown that the degree of foreign language anxiety in case of Portuguese language students is medium and the most significant source of fear are individual differences of the students. It was established that the level of anxiety is the highest while speaking, while reading causes the least anxiety for the students. On the other hand, prior history of visiting the Portuguese speaking countries is not found as important in reducing language anxiety. The most important result is the one which proved an existence of the emotional reaction of fear in higher education and that foreign language anxiety negatively influences foreign language achievement.
