Abstract

U ovom diplomskom radu analizira se motiv stepenica u romanu Zločin i kazna ruskog autora Fjodora Mihajloviča Dostojevskog. Taj motiv ima vrlo važnu ulogu u izgradnji mjesta i vremena radnje. Stepenice se spominju više od 130 puta u tijeku cijelog romana, te su važan detalj pri opisivanju grada Peterburga u kojem se odvija radnja romana. Likovi provode neobično mnogo vremena na stepenicama. Na njima je prikazano krizno vrijeme, stalno se izmjenjuju nepredvidivi događaji, a kratki momenti radnje se proširuju uz pomoć psihologizma. Motiv stepenica je značajan i za stvaranje napete atmosfere u romanu, povezan je s temom ubojstva. Većina likova ne zna tko je ubojica, i kako se mogao nezamijećeno spustiti po stepenicama nakon izvršenog zločina. Također, nepredvidljive odluke koje glavni lik donosi prilikom penjanja i spuštanja po stepenicama unose napetost u radnju aromana. Dostojevski preuzima motiv stepenica iz kršćanske tradicije. On ima važnu ulogu u starozavjetnom tekstu o Jakovljevim ljestvama te u religioznom tekstu Ljestvica, u kojem se opisuje stepenice moralnog i duhovnog usavršavanja. Put Raskoljnikova po peterburškim stepenicama ima religiozni podtekst. On se kreće od teškog grijeha prema iskrenom pokajanju i mogućnosti novog života.

Abstract (english)

In this Master's thesis I analysed the motif of stairs in the novel Crime and Punishment by the Russian author Fyodor Dostoevsky. That motif has an important role for the setting and the pacing of narrative. Stairs are mentioned more than 130 times in the novel, and they are an important detail in the description of Saint Petersburg, in which the plot takes place. The characters spend unusual amount of time on them. The author depicts moments of crisis, the plot consists of unpredictable events and it's short moments are expanded with the use of psychologism. The motif of stairs is also important for the tense atmosphere of the novel. Most of the characters don't know who is the real killer and how he managed to go down the stairs unnoticed. Also, the main character makes unpredictable decisions while climbing up and down the stairs of Saint Petersburg's buildings. Motif of stairs in the novel is connected to the tradition of Christianity. It appears in the biblical text about Jacob's ladder and in the religious text The Ladder of Divine Ascent, which describes the ladder of moral and spiritual ascent. The path of Raskolnikov has a religious subtext. He moves from sin to sincere repentance and the possibility of a new life.
