Abstract

Internet television has changed the way younger generations consume television content by making it available whenever and however viewers want to watch it. This change has also caused binge-watching trends. These tendencies for non-native speakers of English mean large exposure to English input through related content where words more frequently reoccur (Rodgers & Webb, 2009). Previous research has found positive effects of TV watching on L2 language learning (Bahrani & Tam, 2012;... More Hendrih & Letica Krevelj, 2019; Peters & Webb, 2018; Poštič; 2015; Sundqvist, 2009; Webb & Rodgers, 2009; Webb, 2015). This study aimed to see students' exposure to English input through TV series and their perception of this influence on their vocabulary knowledge, pronunciation, willingness to communicate, cultural knowledge, and motivation and interest. The study was conducted in Croatia among 103 third grade grammar school students and their three teachers. The students were English L2 learners. However, 14 of them were in a bilingual school programme with more subjects in English, which is why their results were analysed separately. The teachers were included in the study to see whether they were aware of their students' exposure to TV series, and to investigate their perception of this influence. The results showed a positive attitude in the minds of both the students and their teachers towards TV series in English. Students had large exposure to TV series, and it was confirmed that they preferred streaming services to TV sets. Students also watched TV content with English subtitles or without any subtitles most of the time. They would also choose English over Croatian subtitles when presented with both options. Students were aware of the benefits of TV series on their vocabulary, pronunciation, and to a lesser degree on their willingness to communicate, cultural knowledge, and motivation. Internet televizija promijenila je način na koji mlađe generacije gledaju televizijski sadržaj učinivši ga dostupnim kada god i kako god gledatelji požele. Ta je promjena također izazvala trendove maratonskog gledanja. Navedeno za govornike kojima engleski nije materinski jezik predstavlja veliko izlaganje inputu na engleskom jeziku kroz povezani TV sadržaj u kojem se riječi češće ponavljaju (Rodgers & Webb, 2009). More televizijskog sadržaja na učenje stranog jezika (Bahrani & Tam, 2012; Hendrih & Letica Krevelj, 2019; Peters & Webb, 2018; Poštič; 2015; Sundqvist, 2009; Webb & Rodgers, 2009; Webb, 2015). Cilj ovog istraživanja bio je ispitati izlaganje učenika inputu na engleskom jeziku gledajući TV serije i njihovu percepciju tog utjecaja na njihovo znanje vokabulara, izgovor, spremnost na komunikaciju, znanje kulture, motivaciju i interes. Napravljena su dva upitnika kojima je ispitana navedena percepcija učenika i njihovih nastavnica. U istraživanju je sudjelovalo 103 učenika trećeg razreda jedne zagrebačke jezične gimnazije i njihove tri nastavnice. Učenicima je engleski bio strani jezik. Međutim, 14 učenika pohađalo je dvojezični program koji podrazumijeva više predmeta na engleskom jeziku zbog čega su njihovi rezultati odvojeno obrađeni. Nastavnice su također uključene u istraživanje kako bi se ispitala njihova svjesnost o izlaganju učenika TV serijama na engleskom jeziku i njihova percepcija tog utjecaja. Rezultati su pokazali pozitivno mišljenje i učenika i nastavnica o TV serijama na engleskom jeziku. Učenici su bili izloženi TV serijama na engleskom jeziku u velikoj mjeri koje su većinom gledali preko streaming stranica, a ne televizora. Učenici su gledali televizijski sadržaj većinom s engleskim titlovima ili bez titlova te bi većina odabrala engleske titlove čak i kada su hrvatski titlovi ponuđeni. Učenici su pokazali da su svjesni korisnih učinaka TV serija uglavnom na njihov vokabular, izgovor i u nešto manjoj mjeri na njihovu spremnost za komunikaciju, znanje o kulturi država engleskog govornog područja i motivaciju. Nastavnice su također smatrale TV serije na engleskom jeziku korisnima za usvajanje engleskog jezika te su pokazale da su svjesne koliko se njihovi učenici njima izlažu. Less
