Abstract

This thesis comprises five translations with commentary. Excerpts from three books were translated from English into Croatian (Red Sands. Reportage and Recipes Through Central Asia from Hinterland to Heartland by Caroline Eden, The Hidden Adult. Defining Children’s Literature by Perry Nodelman, 12 Bytes. How We Got Here. Where We Might Go Next by Jeanette Winterson), and two from Croatian into English (Staklo u Dubrovačkoj Republici u svjetlu arheoloških nalaza by Nikolina Topić, Iva, do Mjeseca i natrag by Roman Simić). The commentary focused on various translation problems, with special emphasis on the issue of translating dialects, specifically in a novel. The analysis provided insights into the challenges of maintaining the original message while adapting it to the linguistic and cultural context of the target language.

Rad se sastoji od pet prijevoda s komentarima. Ulomci iz triju knjiga prevedeni su s engleskog jezika na hrvatski jezik (Red Sands. Reportage and Recipes Through Central Asia from Hinterland to Heartland autorice Caroline Eden, The Hidden Adult. Defining Children’s Literature autora Perryja Nodelmana, 12 Bytes. How We Got Here. Where We Might Go Next autorice Jeanette Winterson), dok su s hrvatskog na engleski prevedeni ulomci iz dviju knjiga (Staklo u Dubrovačkoj Republici u svjetlu arheoloških nalaza autorice Nikoline Topić, Iva, do Mjeseca i natrag autora Romana Simića). U popratnim su komentarima u fokusu bili različiti prijevodni problemi, s posebnim naglaskom na problem prevođenja dijalekata, konkretno u romanu. Analiza je pružila uvid u izazove prenošenja izvorne poruke uz istovremenu prilagodbu jezičnom i kulturnom kontekstu ciljnog jezika.
