Abstract

This thesis comprises five translations with commentary. Excerpts from three books translated from English into Croatian (Red Sands. Reportage and Recipes Through Central Asia from Hinterland to Heartland, The Hidden Adult. Defining Children’s Literature, 12 Bytes. How We Got Here. Where We Might Go Next), and two from Croatian into English (Staklo u Dubrovačkoj Republici u svjetlu arheoloških nalaza and Iva, do Mjeseca i natrag). The commentary mainly focuses on the strategies used in translating figurative language, including idioms, metaphors, and culturally specific expressions. The translation procedures varied depending on the genre, the target audience, and the specific figurative language found in the texts. The commentary aims to provide a deeper understanding of the challenges and strategies involved in translating figurative language, with a particular emphasis on maintaining both meaning and stylistic nuances.

Abstract (croatian)

Ovaj rad sastoji se od pet prijevoda s popratnim komentarima. Ulomci iz triju knjiga prevedeni su s engleskog na hrvatski jezik (Red Sands. Reportage and Recipes Through Central Asia from Hinterland to Heartland, The Hidden Adult. Defining Children’s Literature, 12 Bytes. How We Got Here. Where We Might Go Next), a s hrvatskog na engleski jezik prevedeni su ulomci iz dvaju knjiga (Staklo u Dubrovačkoj Republici u svjetlu arheoloških nalaza i Iva, do Mjeseca i natrag). Komentari su prvenstveno usmjereni na strategije prevođenja figurativnog jezika, uključujući idiome, metafore i kulturološki specifične izraze. Izbor prijevodnih postupaka ovisio je o žanru, ciljanoj publici i specifičnim figurativnim izrazima prisutnim u tekstovima. Cilj komentara je pružiti dublji uvid u izazove i strategije prevođenja figurativnog jezika, s posebnim naglaskom na očuvanje značenja i stilskih nijansi.
