Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to discuss the concepts of time and memory in Virginia Woolf’s ''Mrs. Dalloway'' and ''To the Lighthouse''. In order to do this, it is necessary to take into consideration Henri Bergson’s philosophical ideas that had a great impact on the contemporary thought. His theory of pure duration challenges the traditional understanding of time as a measurable concept, and favours instead the consideration of time as a continuous flow which is experienced subjectively, while in his theories on memory he argues that past experiences and memories play a crucial role in shaping human perception of present. This thesis further explores how Woolf, by employing the stream-of- consciousness technique and by exploring the concepts of the fleeting nature of time, mortality, and consciousness, mana ged to convey the fluidity and complexity of the human mind.
