Abstract

Kava je podrijetlom iz Etiopije tj. Abesinije, a postepeno je došla u Jemen čija su brdovita geografska obilježja bila izvrsna za njezin uzgoj. Sufije su ju počeli koristiti u svojim obredima i tako je stekla popularnost i proširila se preko Hidžasa sve do Kaira i Istanbula. Prve kavane u Istanbulu otvorile su se sredinom 16. st., a zbog svoje su se popularnosti kasnije proširile na Balkan i Europu. Kavane su bile značajne za društvo u kojem su nastale jer su pružale novo legitimno i legalno mjesto za javno okupljanje gdje su se ljudi s različitih dijelova društva mogli naći i razgovarati te raspravljati o brojnim temama. Upravo ta činjenica smetala je vladajućem sloju koji su neko vrijeme bezuspješno pokušavali zabraniti druženje u kavanama. I krčma (meyhane) je imala svoje mjesto u društvu, tamo su alkoholu imali pristup nemuslimani i muslimani koji toliko nisu marili za svoj status u društvu.

Abstract (english)

Coffee is originally from Ethiopia, i.e. Abyssinia, and gradually came to Yemen, whose hilly geography was excellent for its cultivation. Sufis began to use it in their rites and thus it gained popularity and spread across the Hejaz all the way to Cairo and Istanbul. The first coffeehouses in Istanbul opened in the middle of the 16th century, and due to their popularity, they later spread to the Balkans and Europe. Coffeehouses were significant for the society in which they were created because they provided a new legitimate and legal place for public gathering where people from different parts of society could meet and talk and discuss numerous topics. This very fact bothered the ruling class, who for some time unsuccessfully tried to ban socializing in coffeehouse. The tavern (meyhane) also had its place in society, where non-Muslims and Muslims who did not care so much about their status in society had access to alcohol.
