Abstract

Rad se bavi analizom oblika ženske popularne kulture u romanu Štefica Cvek u raljama života spisateljice Dubravke Ugrešić. U prvome dijelu rada postavlja se teorijski okvir analize u kojemu se najprije pokušava definirati pojam popularne kulture i srodni fenomeni kao što su masovna i potrošačka kultura. Teorijski se dio zatim usredotočuje na žensku popularnu kulturu, odnosno na ženske žanrove poput popularnoga ljubavnog romana i ženskih časopisa, kojima je analizirani roman uvelike inspiriran. Nakon pregleda postmodernističkih obilježja i smještanja Štefice Cvek u kontekst hrvatske književnosti osamdesetih, slijedi drugi dio rada čiji je cilj promotriti specifičan način na koji odabrano djelo dijalogizira s popularnom kulturom. Analiza započinje naratološkim osvrtom, a zatim se posvećuje postmodernističkim obilježjima, rodnim reprezentacijama, tipičnim predodžbama ženstvenosti i elementima popularne kulture u promatranome romanu. Pritom će se pokazati kako su fabula i likovi romana uvelike oblikovani kulturno raširenim stereotipima i spomenutim formama ženske popularne kulture. Rad završava sintezom iznesene analize te zaključkom o mjestu koje junakinja djela zauzima u hrvatskoj književnosti osamdesetih, ali i o načinima na koje višestruko nadilazi kontekst u kojemu je roman objavljen.

Abstract (english)

This thesis explores the forms of women’s popular culture in the novel Steffie Speck in the Jaws of Life by Dubravka Ugrešić. The first part of the paper begins with an attempt to define the concept of popular culture and related phenomena such as mass and consumer culture. The theoretical part further focuses on women's popular culture, that is, on women's genres such as the popular romance novels and women's magazines, which the analyzed novel was largely inspired by. After the review of postmodernist features and the placement of Steffie Speck in the context of Croatian literature of the 1980s, the second part of the thesis aims to observe the specific way in which the selected novel dialogues with popular culture. The analysis begins with a narratological review and then focuses on postmodernist characteristics, gender representations, typical notions of femininity and elements of popular culture in the observed novel. In doing so it will be shown how the plot and characters of the novel are largely shaped by culturally widespread stereotypes and the aforementioned forms of female popular culture. The paper ends with a synthesis of the presented analysis and a conclusion about the place that the heroine of the chosen novel occupies in the Croatian literature of the eighties, but also about the ways in which she transcends the context in which Steffie Speck in the Jaws of Life was originally published.
