The use of anglicisms on Croatian news websites

Abstract

This diploma thesis investigates to what extent anglicisms are present in the Croatian language, that is, in the Croatian media, considering the increasing influence of the English language and globalization. The paper is divided into two parts, the first is theoretical and the second deals with research into the appearance of Anglicisms in the media, their quantity and analysis. The first part defines key concepts such as linguistic borrowing and words of foreign origin and their division. After that, the concept of anglicism, their use and four types of adaptation to which they can be subjected in the Croatian language are defined. The notion of linguistic purism, its history in Croatia, and the current attitude towards words of foreign origin are defined as well in the first part. The second part deals with anglicisms found on the websites of the Croatian news portals Dnevnik.hr and 24sata.hr. The paper deals with their analysis, adaptation to the Croatian language, and the found anglicisms are compared with the Croatian web corpus and the extent to which they are used in other domains, on other websites, forums and blogs, that is, in the actual use of the language. The research showed that anglicisms are widespread both in the media and in the Croatian web corpus, and some of them have been adapted, while those that are more recent retain their original form.

Ovaj diplomski rad istražuje koliko su anglizmi prisutni u hrvatskom jeziku, odnosno u hrvatskim medijima, s obzirom na sve veći utjecaj engleskog jezika i globalizaciju. Rad je podijeljen u dva dijela, prvi je teorijski, a drugi se bavi istraživanjem prisutnosti anglizama u medijima, njihovom količinom i analizom. U prvom dijelu definiraju se ključni pojmovi kao što su jezično posuđivanje i riječi stranog podrijetla te njihova podjela. Nakon toga se definira pojam anglizama, njihova upotreba i četiri vrste prilagodbe kojima mogu biti podvrgnuti u hrvatskom jeziku. U prvom dijelu definira se i pojam jezičnog purizma, njegova povijest u Hrvatskoj te današnji odnos prema riječima stranog podrijetla. Drugi dio bavi se anglizmima koji se nalaze na stranicama hrvatskih portala Dnevnik.hr i 24sata.hr. Rad se bavi njihovom analizom, prilagodbom hrvatskom jeziku, a pronađeni anglizmi uspoređuju se s hrvatskim web korpusom i u kojoj su mjeri korišteni u drugim domenama, na drugim web stranicama, forumima i blogovima, odnosno u stvarnom korištenju jezika. Istraživanje je pokazalo da su anglizmi rašireni kako u medijima tako i u hrvatskom web korpusu te su neki od njih adaptirani, dok su oni novijeg datuma zadržali izvorni oblik.
