Abstract

This thesis comprises five translations with commentary. Excerpts from three books were translated from English into Croatian (“Watching the English: The Hidden Rules of English Behaviour” by Kate Fox, “Sociology Beyond Societies: Mobilities for the Twenty-First Century” by John Urry and “The Age of Living Machines: How Biology Will Build the Next Technology Revolution” by Susan Hockfield), and two from Croatian into English (“Spomenici otoka Lopuda od antike do srednjeg vijeka” by Ivana Tomas and Maja Zeman, and “Nasmijati psa i sedam novih priča” by Olja Savičević Ivančević). The commentary focused on a variety of issues such as culture-specific items, terminology and metaphors, and it provided reasoning behind certain translation choices. The translation problems analysed in the commentary were largely influenced by the type of text in question, so the texts dealing with biology and archaeology resulted in a commentary focused primarily on terminology, while other texts presented issues such as translating accents and situations in which retaining some of the source text in the target text was necessary for cultural reasons.

Abstract (croatian)

Rad se sastoji od pet prijevoda s popratnim komentarima. Ulomci iz triju knjiga prevedeni su s engleskoga na hrvatski jezik („Watching the English: The Hidden Rules of English Behaviour“, „Sociology Beyond Societies: Mobilities for the Twenty-First Century“ i „The Age of Living Machines: How Biology Will Build the Next Technology Revolution“), a dviju knjiga s hrvatskoga na engleski jezik („Spomenici otoka Lopuda od antike do srednjeg vijeka“ i „Nasmijati psa i sedam novih priča“). Komentari su usmjereni na razne probleme poput kulturno-specifičnih elemenata, terminologije i metafora te objašnjavaju određene odluke koje je prevoditelj donio. Prijevodni problemi kojima se bave komentari uvelike su diktirani vrstom samoga teksta, pa su tekstovi o biologiji i arheologiji rezultirali komentarima usredotočenima prvenstveno na terminologiju, dok se u drugim tekstovima javljaju problemi poput prevođenja naglasaka te situacija u kojima je, iz kulturoloških razloga, bilo nužno zadržati dijelove izvornoga teksta u prijevodu.
