Abstract

This thesis comprises five translations with commentary. Excerpts from three books were translated from English into Croatian (Watching the English. The Hidden Rules of English Behaviour; Sociology Beyond Societies. Mobilities for the Twenty First Century and The Age of Living Machines), while two excerpts were translated from Croatian into English (Spomenici otoka Lopuda od antike do srednjeg vijeka, and Nasmijati psa i sedam novih priča). The commentary is primarily focused on two strategies that a translator can utilize in their translation, foreignization and domestication. These is no single translation strategy applicable to all culture-specific items, which is why I also considered various other elements that can influence the translator’s choice, such as the type of text, the purpose of translation, the target audience, and translator’s own judgement.

Abstract (croatian)

Ovaj rad sadrži pet prijevoda s komentarima. S engleskog jezika na hrvatski prevedeni su ulomci iz triju knjiga (Watching the English. The Hidden Rules of English Behaviour; Sociology Beyond Societies. Mobilities for the Twenty First Century and The Age of Living Machines), a s hrvatskog na engleski ulomci iz dviju knjiga (Spomenici otoka Lopuda od antike do srednjeg vijeka i Nasmijati psa i sedam novih priča). U komentarima je u prvom redu naglasak na dvjema strategijama koje prevoditelji mogu upotrijebiti u svojim prijevodima, postranjivanje i podomaćivanje. Budući da ne postoji jedna jedina prevoditeljska strategija koja bi se mogla primijeniti na sve kulturno-specifične elemente, osvrnula sam se na razne druge elemente koji mogu utjecati na izbor prevoditelja, kao što je vrsta teksta, svrha prijevoda, ciljna publika i prevoditeljeva vlastita procjena.
