Abstract
Debate is an essential tool that we use in our daily lives. In modern times, having good foreign language skills is not only important for exchanging concrete information but also for discussing and debating, especially in the business world. However, using a foreign language spontaneously for this purpose requires more than just language acquisition. It requires systematic acquisition of rhetorical skills, which are often only taught in native language classes. Therefore, it is important to learn critical thinking, disagreeing, and engaging in debates in a foreign language at a young age in school. This thesis presents the history and types of debates and practical applications of debates in teaching German as a foreign language. A series of lessons (one unit) has shown that this task is too difficult for individual teachers. However, with the support of professional instructions adapted to the specific age and language level, debate in the classroom can be successfully implemented.
