Abstract

Das 20. Jahrhundert lässt sich mit einem Wort glaubwürdig zusammenfassen: Chaos. Zahlreiche Katastrophen, Kriege, Revolutionen und Depressionen, aber auch weltverändernde technologische Innovationen und gesellschaftliche und politische Neuheiten prägten das ganze Jahrhundert und seine Einwohner. Zwei Autoren befassten sich insbesondere mit der daraus resultierenden Absurdität und Komplexität der Welt und deren Folgen auf das menschliche Leben, nämlich Franz Kafka und Friedrich Dürrenmatt. Um ihre absurden Welten gerecht darzustellen, wird der Zufall zu einem relevanten Gegenstand ihres literarischen Schaffens. Die vorliegende Diplomarbeit beschäftigt sich mit dem Zufall in Franz Kafkas Der Prozess (1925) und Friedrich Dürrenmatts Antikriminalroman Justiz (1985). Erstens wird eine theoretische Grundlage für die Darstellung des Zufalls in der Literatur aufgebaut, basiert auf Erich Köhlers Studie Der literarische Zufall, das Mögliche und die Notwendigkeit (1973). Zweitens wird Franz Kafka unter die Lupe genommen und der sozio-historische Kontext seiner Zeit wird geschildert, damit anschließend Der Prozess innerhalb dieses Kontexts analysiert werden kann. Schließlich wird Dürrenmatt und sein Werk Justiz auf dieselbe Weise analysiert. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, die Funktionen des Zufalls in den jeweiligen Werken zu erschließen und sie mit dem sozio-historischen Kontext der Entstehungszeiten der Werke in Verbindung zu setzen. Auf diese Weise wird deutlich, inwiefern der Zufall ein relevanter Gegenstand der Literaturgeschichte ist.

Abstract (english)

The 20th century can be credibly summarized with one word: chaos. Numerous disasters, wars, revolutions, and depressions, as well as world-changing technological innovations and societal and political novelties, shaped the entire century and its inhabitants. Two authors in particular dealt with the resulting absurdity and complexity of the world and its consequences on human life, namely Franz Kafka and Friedrich Dürrenmatt. To do justice to their absurd worlds, chance becomes a relevant subject of their literary work. This thesis deals with chance in Franz Kafka's Der Prozess (1925) and Friedrich Dürrenmatt's anti-crime novel Justiz (1985). Firstly, a theoretical foundation for the representation of chance in literature is established, based on Erich Köhler's study Der literarische Zufall, das Mögliche und die Notwendigkeit (1973). Secondly, Franz Kafka is examined and the socio-historical context of his time is described so that Der Prozess can be analysed within this context. Finally, Dürrenmatt and his work Justiz are analysed in the same way. The goal of this thesis is to uncover the functions of chance in the respective works and to connect them with the socio-historical context of their time. This paper aims to make clear to which extent chance is a relevant subject of literary history.
