Abstract

Ovaj diplomski rad donosi usporedni prikaz stavova antičkih filozofa koji su raspravljali o vegetarijanskom načinu života. Sadrži pet velikih cjelina: uvod u kojem iznosimo nacrt antičke konceptualizacije vegetarijanstva, prvi dio rada, koji se odnosi na razmatranja o prvim filozofima koji su se zalagali za vegetarijanski način života (Pitagora, Empedoklo, kinik Diogen, Platon i Teofrast), središnji dio, koji prikazuje stajališta filozofa nesklonih vegetarijanstvu (od stoika do epikurejaca), završni dio, koji se bavi Plutarhovom i Porfirijevom filozofijom u kojoj se brojnim argumentima zastupa vegetarijanstvo, te zaključak. Cilj rada je ukazati na različite stavove antičkih filozofa spram vegetarijanstva te istaknuti važnost koja je pridavana posjedovanju razuma u raspravi o moralnome statusu životinja.

Abstract (english)

This thesis provides a comparative overview of the views of the philosophers of ancient Greece on the vegetarian way of life. The thesis itself consists of five major parts: the introduction, which elaborates the Greek concept of vegetarianism; the first chapter, which introduces the earliest philosophers who advocated vegetarianism (Pythagoras, Empedocles, Diogenes the Cynic, Plato and Theophrastus); the second part, which provides the views of the philosophers who opposed vegetarianism (Stoics and Epicureans); the final part, which brings a detailed analysis of the arguments for vegetarianism postulated by Plutarch and Porphyry; and the conclusion. Purpose of this thesis is to analyse and compare different attitudes towards vegetarianism in the context of ancient Greek philosophy, and to emphasise the importance attributed to Reason in the discussion concerning the moral status of animals.
