Abstract

This thesis comprises five annonated translations, accompanied by a discussion. Excerpts translated from English into Croatian were taken from Adam Kay’s book This is going to Hurt. Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor, Emer O’Sullivan’s article on children’s literature Does Pinocchio have an Italian passport? What is specifically National and what is International about Classics of Children’s Literature? and the book Quantitative research methods in translation and interpreting studies by Christopher Mellinger and Thomas Hanson. Excerpts translated from Croatian into English were taken from Antoni Cetnarowicz's book Narodni preporod u Istri (1860–1907) and Sven Popović's novel Uvjerljivo drugi. The discussion focuses on the importance of cultural knowledge in translation. The emphasis is on the extralinguistic realities of both source and target languages in the context of translation. On the basis of examples of translation problems from the excerpts, this paper argues that the translator must have a wide knowledge of both source and target culture to be able to recognise a certain culture's extralinguistic reality and translate it accordingly.

Diplomski rad sastoji se od pet prijevoda popraćenih bilješkama i rasprave. Ulomci prevedeni s engleskog na hrvatski preuzeti su iz knjige Adama Kaya This is going to Hurt. Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor, članka s područja dječje književnosti Emer O’Sullivan Does Pinocchio have an Italian passport? What is specifically National and what is International about Classics of Children’s Literature? i knjige Quantitative research methods in translation and interpreting studies Christophera Mellingera i Thomasa Hansona. Ulomci prevedeni s hrvatskog na engleski preuzeti su iz knjige Antonija Cetnarowicza Narodni preporod u Istri (1860–1907) i romana Uvjerljivo drugi Svena Popovića. U raspravi se govori o važnosti poznavanja kultura u prevođenju. Naglasak je na ekstralingvističkim čimbenicima izvorne i ciljne kulture u kontekstu prevođenja. Na temelju primjera prijevodnih problema iz ulomaka tekstova, u ovom radu obrazlaže se tvrdnja da prevoditelji moraju imati široko znanje o izvornoj i ciljnoj kulturi kako bi mogli prepoznati ekstralingvističke čimbenike pojedine kulture i prevesti zadani tekst u skladu s tom spoznajom.
