Abstract

Ovaj diplomski rad donosi rezultate istraživanja o subjektivnoj procjeni stupnja predočivosti dvojezičnih govornika, čiji je materinski jezik (J1) hrvatski, a drugi jezik (J2) njemački ili engleski. Cilj rada je istražiti postoje li razlike u procjeni predočivosti ovisno o tome vrši li se procjena na J1 ili J2. Sukladno tome, ispitanici studije procjenjivali su imenice na J2, a rezultati su u konačnici uspoređeni s procjenama stupnja predočivosti na J1, prikupljenima iz Hrvatske psiholingvističke baze (HPB). U radu se prvo iznosi teorijski prikaz vezan uz subjektivnu predočivost, te razlike i odnos između pojma predočivosti i pojma konkretnosti, potom se dotiče i objašnjava pojmove dvojezičnosti i mentalnog leksikona i njegove strukture kod dvojezičnih govornika. Nakon toga se tumači metodologija istraživanja te se prikazuju rezultati subjektivne procjene predočivosti i iznose se osnovni analitički statistički podaci ispitivanja na ukupnome uzorku riječi, ali i prema srodnome statusu i razini konkretnosti/apstraktnosti riječi. Rezultati pokazuju da postoje razlike u procjeni predočivosti riječi na J2 u odnosu na procjene na J1 te da kategorija srodnosti i posebice kategorija konkretnosti imaju utjecaj na procjenu. U raspravi i zaključku rezultati dobiveni istraživanjem interpretiraju se u kontekstu najuvrježenijih teorija o učinku predočivosti kod dvojezičnih govornika.

Abstract (english)

This paper presents the results of research on the subjective assessment of the degree of imageability in bilingual speakers, whose mother tongue (L1) is Croatian and whose second language (L2) is German or English. The aim of the research is to investigate whether there are differences in the assessment of imageability depending on whether it is estimated in L1 or L2. Accordingly, the participants evaluated nouns in L2, and the results were ultimately compared with evaluations for those nouns in L1 collected from the Croatian Psycholinguistic Database. The paper begins with a theoretical account of subjective imageability, and the difference and relationship between the notion of imageability and the notion of concreteness, followed by an explication of the concepts of bilingualism and the (bilingual) mental lexicon and its structure. Afterwards, the research methodology and the results of the subjective assessment of imageability are presented. The results consist of basic analytical statistics of the total sample of words as well as according to the cognate status and the level of concreteness/abstractness of the words. The results show that there are differences in the estimation of word imageability in L2 with respect to estimates in L1 and that proposed categories, in particular word concreteness, have an influence on the assessment. In the discussion and conclusion, the research findings are interpreted in the context of the most established theories of the effect of imageability in bilingual speakers.

Abstract (german)

Die vorliegende Arbeit liefert die Forschungsergebnisse zur subjektiven Beurteilung des Vorstellbarkeitsgrades von Zweitsprachlern, deren Muttersprache (S1) Kroatisch und deren Zweitsprache (S2) Deutsch oder Englisch ist. Das Ziel ist es zu untersuchen, ob es Unterschiede in der Schätzung der Vorstellbarkeit gibt, je nachdem, ob sie in S1 oder S2 geschätzt wird. Dementsprechend bewerteten die Befragten die Substantive in S2 und die Ergebnisse wurden, letztendlich, mit den in S1 aus der kroatischen psycholinguistischen Datenbank vorgenommenen Schätzungen verglichen. Die Arbeit beginnt mit einer theoretischen Darstellung der subjektiven Vorstellbarkeit, bzw. mit einer Ausarbeitung des Unterschieds und der Beziehung zwischen dem Begriff „Vorstellbarkeit“ und dem Begriff „Konkretheit“, gefolgt von einer Erläuterung der Konzepte der Zweisprachigkeit und des (zweisprachigen) mentalen Lexikons und seiner Struktur. Anschließend werden die Forschungsmethodik und die Ergebnisse der subjektiven Beurteilung der Vorstellbarkeit vorgestellt. Die Ergebnisse bestehen aus der grundlegenden analytischen Statistik der gesamten Wortstichprobe, sowie in Anlehnung an den Kognatstatus und den Konkretheitsgrad der Wörter. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass es Unterschiede in der Schätzung der Wortvorstellbarkeit in S2 in Bezug auf die Schätzung in S1 gibt und dass vorgeschlagene Kategorien, insbesondere die Wortkonkretheit, einen Einfluss auf die Bewertung haben. In der Diskussion und Schlussfolgerung werden die Forschungsergebnisse im Kontext der etablierten Theorien zum Effekt der Vorstellbarkeit beim Zweitsprachlern interpretiert.
