Abstract

This paper deals with the representation of historical trauma in Alfred Hitchcock’s Foreign Correspondent (1940), Saboteur (1942), and Lifeboat (1944). With a special emphasis on World War II, Hitchcock’s films reflect the impact of trauma that shapes individual and collective memory. While the paper operates with modern and contemporary trauma theories to analyse the complexity of trauma and its long-lasting influence on psyche and memory, Hitchcock’s background and style are used to comment on the theoretical framework of historical trauma. The three Hitchcock wartime films all engage the psychological impact of wartime conspiracy and espionage, persecution and prosecution, and survival. In Foreign Correspondent, Johnny Jones is involved in espionage that aims to alter global stability. The narrative symbolizes the pre-war anxieties and the dystopian future about to unravel. Saboteur follows Barry Kane, falsely accused and on a mission to clear out his name and attest his innocence. The film focuses on the themes of blame, blamelessness and psychological strain in such an endeavour. Finally, Lifeboat examines the theme of wartime survival in a confined space and addresses the issues of ethical ambiguity and survivors’ agony. I therefore argue that Hitchcock’s works constitute a critical commentary on the psychological and social ramifications of World War II, and foreground cinema’s role in documenting and processing historical trauma. The paper concludes by accentuating the relevance of working through trauma in the constitution of cultural memory and identity.
