Abstract

Istraživanja ženskog zdravlja u starom Egiptu i Mezopotamiji otkrivaju razne spoznaje o medicinskim praksama ovih drevnih civilizacija. Osim toga, pruža se uvid u društvene uloge i kulturne stavove prema ženama. Egipatsko medicinsko znanje, kao što je dokazano u tekstovima poput Ebersovog papirusa i ginekološkog papirusa iz Kahuna, uključuje razumijevanje anatomije žene, reproduktivnog zdravlja i poroda. Nasuprot tome mezopotamski pogledi na žensko zdravlje bili su složeniji i varirali ovisno o specifičnoj civilizaciji unutar regije. Općenito, tema ženskog zdravlja u Egiptu i Mezopotamiji naglašava važnost zdravstvene zaštite žena u društvu. Oboje su civilizacije prepoznale važnost reproduktivnog zdravlja žena te su pokušavali osigurati odgovarajuće lijekove biljnog i životinjskog sastava. Magija i religija bili su neodvojivi od zdravstvene skrbi. Stanovnici Egipta i Mezopotamije cijenili su rituale te su uz pomoć njihovih božanstava liječili pacijente. Fokus na ženskom zdravlju u Egiptu i Mezopotamiji prvenstveno je bio usmjeren na plodnost, rađanje i reproduktivno zdravlje, odražavajući važnost uloge žena u obitelji i društvu. Obje su civilizacije razvile medicinske prakse koje su kombinirale biljne lijekove, magične rituale te znanje i iskustvo primalja i doktora. Iako je tadašnje znanje o medicini bilo ograničeno ipak je postavilo temelje za razumijevanje i liječenje ženskih zdravstvenih problema.

Abstract (english)

The research of female health in Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia reveals fascinating insights about medical practices of these ancient civilizations. Other than that, it also shines a new light on societal roles and cultural attitudes towards women. Egyptian medical knowledge, as evidenced by texts like the Ebers Papyrus and the Kahun Gynecological Papyrus, included detailed understanding of womens anatomy, reproductive health, and childbirth. In contrast, Mesopotamian views on female health were more complex and varied depending on the specific civilization within the region. Mesopotamian medical knowledge, documented in cuneiform texts also addressed women's health issues. However, societal roles for women were generally more restrictive compared to Egypt, with women primarily responsible for domestic duties and childrearing. Despite this, there were female midwives and healers who attended to women during childbirth and illnesses. Overall, the subject of female health in Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia underscores the significance of women's healthcare within these ancient societies. While both civilizations recognized the importance of women's reproductive health and provided medical treatments, Egyptian women generally had more rights and access to specialized healthcare services compared to their Mesopotamian counterparts. Studying female health in these civilizations enriches our understanding of ancient medical practices and the cultural contexts in which they developed.
