Abstract

Kako industrija igara kontinuirano raste, tako i društvene igre (eng. board games) postaju sve popularnije. Motivi za igranje društvenih igara nisu toliko poznati te smo se odlučili provesti eksploratorno istraživanje s ciljem identificiranja glavnih motiva za bavljenje društvenim igrama. Koristili smo teoriju samoodređenja kao osnovni teorijski okvir motivacije i potreba kao i hipoteze o motivaciji za bavljenje geek aktivnostima koje su predložili McCain i sur. (2015). Provedene su dvije fokus grupe, a za analizu je korištena tematska analiza. U istraživanju je sudjelovalo 9 sudionika čiji je raspon godina od 20 do 47. Analizom je ustanovljeno pet glavnih tema: povezanost, kompetentnost, autonomija, estetika i novost. U skladu s teorijom samoodređenja, osnovne psihološke potrebe za povezanošću, kompetentnošću i autonomijom pokazale su se značajnim motivatorima. Od hipoteza vezanih za geek aktivnosti, migracija u izmišljeni svijet i aktivno sudjelovanje nisu se istaknule kao važni faktori, dok je pripadanje bilo prisutno u sklopu povezanosti. Motivatori su bili međusobno povezani, tako da zadovoljavanje jednog može omogućiti zadovoljavanje drugog, ili nezadovoljavanje jednog može dovesti do nezadovoljavanja drugog. Povezanost je bila glavni motivator te se najveća pažnja stavljala na očuvanje prijateljske atmosfere. Kompetentnost se pojavljivala, ali tek kada je bio zadovoljen uvjet prijateljske atmosfere. Nezadovoljenje autonomije moglo je dovesti do potpune ravnodušnosti prema igri, dok su estetika i novost utjecali na to koja igra će se odabrati i koliko će se igra svidjeti pojedincima. Struktura koju igra pružala kroz svoj dizajn i način na koji su igrači komunicirali jedni s drugima zajedno su stvorili motivacijski stil koji je mogao poticati ili ugrožavati intrinzičnu motivaciju.

Abstract (english)

As the gaming industry continues to grow, so does the popularity of board games. Since the motives for playing board games are not well known, we decided to conduct an exploratory study with the aim of identifying the main motivators for playing them. We used self-determination theory as the basic theoretical framework of motivation and needs, as well as the hypotheses about motivation for engaging in geek activities from McCain et al. (2015). Two focus groups were conducted and the data were analyzed using thematic analysis. In total 9 participants took part in the study, whose ages ranged from 20 to 47. The analysis established five main themes: relatedness, competence, autonomy, aesthetics and novelty. In accordance with self-determination theory, the basic psychological needs of relatedness, competence and autonomy proved to be significant motivators. Considering the hypotheses of McCain et al. (2015), the great fantasy migration and the desire for engagement hypotheses did not stand out as important motivators, while belonging was present as part of relatedness. The needs were interconnected, with satisfaction of one leading to the satisfaction of another, and frustration in one contributing to frustration in others. Relatedness emerged as the main motivator for playing and enjoyment, with the greatest emphasis placed on maintaining a friendly atmosphere. Competence was a significant motivator, but it only when the condition of a friendly atmosphere was met. Autonomy was another crucial factor, and its absence led to complete indifference to the game. Aesthetics and novelty influenced game selection and degree of enjoyment. The game's structure, through its design and the way players interacted, created a motivating style that either enhanced or undermined intrinsic motivation.
