Abstract

Ovaj se diplomski rad bavi reprezentacijom i značenjem kulinarskih motiva u odabranim djelima poljske književnosti do razdoblja modernizma. Riječ je o djelu Gospodin Tadija Adama Mickiewicza te djelima Lutka i Emancipantkinje Bolesława Prusa. Analiza kulinarskih motiva u navedenim djelima ukazuje na njihovu ulogu u stvaranju kulturnog identiteta te prenošenju komentara na temu društva ili društvenog poretka i razvoj pojedinih likova. U Gospodinu Tadiji kulinarski motivi često služe kao simbol poljskog nacionalnog identiteta i zajedništva, pritom odražavajući društveno-politički kontekst podijeljene Poljske u 19. stoljeću, a u raznim se opisima jela nazire i Mickiewiczeva duboka čežnja za izgubljenom domovinom. S druge strane u Lutki i Emancipantkinjama Prus koristi kulinarske motive kako bi karakterizirao svoje likove – često u negativnom svjetlu, naglašavajući njihovu sklonost materijalizmu ili prikazujući njihovo moralno propadanje – te kritizirao društvene promjene i klasne razlike prisutne u Poljskoj potkraj 19. stoljeća.

Abstract (english)

This thesis deals with the representation and meaning of culinary motifs in selected works of Polish literature up to the period of modernism. The selected works are Adam Mickiewicz's Pan Tadeusz and Bolesław Prus's The Doll and The New Woman. The analysis of culinary motifs in the mentioned works shows their role in the creation of cultural identity, conveying commentary on the topic of society or social order, and the development of individual characters. In Pan Tadeusz, culinary motifs often serve as a symbol of Polish national identity and unity, while reflecting the socio-political context of a divided Poland in the 19th century. Aside from that, Mickiewicz's deep longing for his lost homeland can also be glimpsed in the various descriptions of the dishes. On the other hand, in The Doll and The New Woman, Prus uses culinary motifs to develop his characters (often in a negative light, emphasizing their devotion to materialism or showing their moral decay) and to criticize the social changes and class differences present in Poland at the end of the 19th century.
