English borrowings in Croatian and their role in identity construction

Abstract

English borrowings are quickly becoming everyday Croatian words and their large number makes them relevant to the way speakers construct their identity and language attitudes. This study compares feelings and beliefs about L1 Croatian words and L2 English borrowings with the aim of looking into what motivates speakers to use borrowings. To this end, two semi-structured focus groups were conducted in May 2024. The participants who shared their reflections about first language and borrowed words were four English MA students and six eight-grade elementary school pupils in a foreign language school. They were given six pairs of L1 Croatian and L2 English borrowed words to compare how they use them and what they associate them with. The results showed that speakers adapt their use of borrowings and shift their identity based on a given social situation. In all contexts, speakers claimed borrowings carried different connotations than first language words and they were highly aware of their language use. L1 Croatian words were considered emotionally warmer and stronger in impact, with borrowings taking precedence in some cases due to identity concerns. The present study contributes to bilingualism research by giving a speaker-focused perspective to the meaning of borrowed words.

Abstract (croatian)

Engleske riječi postaju sve učestalije u hrvatskom govoru i njihov se velik broj očituje u načinu na koji hrvatski govornici konstruiraju identitet i formiraju jezične stavove. Ovaj rad uspoređuje uvjerenja i osjećaje o riječima koje se smatraju izvorno hrvatskima, i riječima koje dolaze iz engleskog jezika, s ciljem proučavanja motivacije koja potiče jezično posuđivanje. S tim u vidu, provedene su dvije polu-strukturirane fokus grupe u svibnju 2024. Sudionici su bili četiri studenta diplomskog studija Engleskog jezika i književnosti na Sveučuilištu u Zagrebu, te šest učenika osmog razreda osnovne škole, koji su također pohađali engleski u školi stranih jezika. Za usporedbu im je ponuđeno šest parova hrvatskih i engleskih riječi kako bi odredili asocijacije na svaku riječ i kontekst u kojem se koriste. Rezultati su pokazali da govornici prilagođavaju svoju uporabu posuđenica i mijenjaju identitet ovisno o određenom društvenom kontekstu. Sudionici su tvrdili kako posuđenice u svim kontekstima imaju različite konotacije od hrvatskih riječi, a bili su i veoma svjesni jezika koji koriste. Nadalje, hrvatske su riječi bile emotivno toplije i snažnijeg dojma, dok bi posuđenice zauzele takav položaj samo u određenim situacijama zbog konstrukcije identiteta. Ovaj rad doprinosi istraživanju dvojezičnosti u širem smislu tako što pruža uvid u perspektivu govornika i njihovog poimanja značenja posuđenica.
