Abstract

This master’s thesis is exploring the receptive vocabulary of young learners of English with a vocabulary test. In the theoretical framework, children’s cognitive development is presented, along with some factors that influence children’s development. The theoretical framework also offers a short overview of the Helen Doron method for a better understanding of the conditions in which the children have been learning English. The last part of the theoretical framework deals with vocabulary tests, their characteristics and usage. The second part of the master’s thesis presents the study, which was conducted with ten children from a Helen Doron school in Zagreb. The study’s aim was to explore the characteristics of the Pic-lex vocabulary test and get a general understanding of the receptive vocabulary that the children have. After the methodology is presented, the results are analyzed, and conclusions are drawn. It was discovered that children’s vocabulary matched what was expected for their age. Moreover, the test was appropriate for their age and did not cause any distractions for them.
