Abstract

Dubbelsupinum är en konstruktion i vilken ett verb i supinum tar ett annat verb i supinum som komplement i stället för ett verb i infinitiv (t.ex. Jag hade kunnat köpt huset.). Tidigare forskning har diskuterat om dubbelsupinum har någon annan betydelse än den standardspråkliga konstruktionen med supinum + infinitiv. Medan vissa beskrivningar hävdar att de två konstruktionerna semantiskt sett är likadana, menar andra att dubbelsupinum kan betraktas som markör för irreell fakticitet eller avgränsad aktionsart. Syftet med den här uppsatsen har således varit att bekräfta eller motbevisa dessa antaganden om dubbelsupinums betydelse genom en korpusbaserad undersökning. Sammanlagt har 502 träffar med dubbelsupinum excerperats ur en korpus med texter från sociala medier och analyserats enligt fakticitet och aktionsart. Resultaten visar att dubbelsupinum oftare förekommer i faktiska än irreella propositioner och att de olika förstaverben i dubbelsupinum finns i båda sammanhangen. Dubbelsupinum används i både avgränsade och oavgränsade satser nästan lika frekvent. Dessutom beror aktionsarten inte på dubbelsupinum, utan på andra satsled och den inherenta betydelsen hos de verb som ingår i dubbelsupinum. Resultaten stödjer därför inte analysen av dubbelsupinum som uttryck för irrealitet och avgränsad aktionsart, utan de talar för tesen om att dubbelsupinum och supinum + infinitiv har samma betydelse.

Abstract (english)

Double supine is a construction in Swedish in which a verb in the supine form takes another verb in the supine form, rather than in infinitive, as its complement. Previous research has discussed whether the double supine has a different meaning than the standard construction with supine + infinitive. While some studies claim that the two constructions are semantically the same, others state that the double supine can be regarded as a marker of counterfactuality or telicity. The aim of this thesis has thus been to confirm or disprove these assumptions about the meaning of the double supine with a corpus-based study. In total, 502 examples with the double supine have been extracted from a corpus of texts from social media and analysed with regard to factuality and telicity. The results show that the double supine occurs more often in factual than counterfactual propositions and that the different first verbs in the double supine are found in both contexts. The double supine is almost equally used in both telic and atelic clauses. Furthermore, telicity depends on the inherent meaning of the verbs found in the double supine construction and other clause elements rather than on the double supine. Therefore, the results do not support the analysis of the double supine as a marker of counterfactuality and telicity, but as having the same meaning as the construction with supine + infinitive.

Abstract (croatian)

Dvostruki supin je konstrukcija u švedskom u kojoj glagol u supinu kao svoju dopunu uzima drugi glagol u supinu umjesto u infinitivu. U prethodnim se istraživanjima raspravljalo o tome razlikuje li se dvostruki supin značenjski od standardne konstrukcije supin + infinitiv. Dok neki opisi tvrde da su te dvije konstrukcije semantički iste, drugi navode da se dvostruki supin može smatrati markerom nefaktivnosti ili teličnosti. Cilj je ovog rada stoga potvrditi ili opovrgnuti ove pretpostavke o značenju dvostrukog supina na temelju korpusnog istraživanja. Ukupno je 502 primjera dvostrukog supina izdvojeno iz korpusa tekstova s društvenih mreža i analizirano prema faktivnosti i teličnosti. Rezultati pokazuju da se dvostruki supin češće javlja u faktivnim nego nefaktivnim propozicijama i da su različiti prvi glagoli u dvostrukom supinu potvrđeni u oba konteksta. Dvostruki supin gotovo se jednako često koristi u teličnim i ateličnim rečenicama. Nadalje, teličnost u primjerima ovisi o inherentnom značenju glagola i drugim rečeničnim dijelovima, a ne o dvostrukom supinu. Rezultati, stoga, ne potvrđuju analizu dvostrukog supina kao pokazatelja nefaktivnosti i teličnosti, već idu u prilog tezi da dvostruki supin i supin + infinitiv imaju isto značenje.
