Abstract

The paper covers the historical analysis of education in Croatia and describes the contemporary educational system. Afterward, the paper focuses on educational opportunities of people with disabilities and compares the historical and contemporary treatment of people with disabilities. Moreover, it explores the complexities of educational inequalities and analyzes socio-cultural attitudes towards educational inequalities ranging from early childhood, pre-school, and primary education to... More secondary and higher education, and finally examines education of adults. One of the main parts of the paper is the case study of Helen Keller’s global influence on education and her relevance to the Croatian context. The paper offers the research of Helen Keller's work and influence, initially on American society and education, and later on her global influence. Moreover, it investigates the current situation in Croatia related to people with disabilities or other difficulties, analyzes people's attitudes and awareness of such problems, and offers possible solutions with the aim of raising awareness and developing empathy towards people in this situation. It also provides an analysis of the American education system and a comparison with the Croatian system. Furthermore, the paper provides a critique of sociology in Croatia and the sociology taught in high school classes due to the lack of interest and any literature on disability and difficulties.
