Abstract

Ovaj rad istražuje evoluciju prikazivanja Roma u filmu, od ranih stereotipnih prikaza do suvremenih, slojevitijih portreta. U početku, filmski prikazi Roma bili su ograničeni na stereotipe egzotičnosti i mističnosti, često zanemarujući složenost i bogatstvo romske kulture. Promjena paradigme dogodila se s radom redatelja poput Tonyja Gatlifa, čiji filmovi poput "Latcho Droma" ističu kulturnu raznolikost i dubinu Roma kroz empatičniju perspektivu. Ovaj preokret u prikazivanju odmaknuo se od jednodimenzionalnih prikaza, pružajući raznolike priče koje istovremeno slave romsko kulturno nasljeđe i univerzalna ljudska iskustva. Nadalje, razvoj dokumentarnih filmova i filmova režiranih od strane Roma samih usmjerio je pažnju na stvarne izazove s kojima se romska zajednica suočava, uključujući diskriminaciju i borbu za očuvanje kulture. Unatoč napretku, prepreke u borbi protiv ukorijenjenih stereotipa i osiguranju poštovanja romskih glasova u kinematografiji ostaju izazov. Ovaj rad naglašava važnost nastavka borbe protiv stereotipa i zagovaranja za inkluzivniju i autentičniju reprezentaciju Roma u filmskoj industriji, kao ključni dio šireg diskursa o raznolikosti, zastupljenosti i pravednosti u medijima.

Abstract (english)

This study delves into the evolving depiction of Roma in cinematic narratives, tracing the trajectory from initial, stereotypical representations to nuanced, multidimensional portrayals in contemporary cinema. Early cinematic depictions of the Roma were predominantly framed within the confines of exoticism and mysticism, frequently overlooking the intricate complexities and the rich tapestry of Roma culture. A significant shift in perspective was heralded by the contributions of filmmakers such as Tony Gatlif, whose works, exemplified by "Latcho Drom," accentuate the cultural diversity and profundity of the Roma community through a lens of empathy and understanding. This transformation in cinematic representation marked a departure from simplistic characterizations, embracing a spectrum of narratives that celebrate both the distinct cultural heritage of the Roma and the universal aspects of human experience. Moreover, the emergence of documentaries and narrative films directed by members of the Roma community itself has cast a spotlight on the genuine challenges and adversities faced by the Roma, including systemic discrimination and the ongoing efforts to preserve their cultural identity. Despite notable advancements in the portrayal of Roma in film, significant challenges persist in dismantling persistent stereotypes and ensuring that Roma voices are represented with dignity and accuracy in the cinematic sphere. This analysis underscores the critical need for sustained engagement in challenging reductive stereotypes and championing a more inclusive and authentic representation of the Roma within the film industry. It posits that such efforts are indispensable components of the broader dialogue concerning diversity, representation, and equity in media. This endeavor not only contributes to a richer, more diverse cinematic landscape but also aligns with the imperative to foster a more equitable and understanding societal discourse regarding marginalized communities.
